Through the Night

Magnolia was very restless after surgery.  She was agitated and fighting the ventilator.  While it was nice to see that she was aware and wanting to be active, we really wanted her to rest and recover.  The PICU staff started her out on 2 ug/kg/hr of Fentanyl and continued to very slowly raise the dose to see what would make her comfortable.  This morning she is at a 4. They didn't want to raise it too quickly because although her blood pressure was stable there were a couple of times it was reading low.  She spiked several fevers last night, the highest being 102.7 F.  Seizures were obviously on our mind but thankfully she did not have one last night.  We kept covering her with cool cloths and giving her Tylenol.  They gave her a Morphine shot and that didn't help at all.  Finally around 4 am they administered a sedative. Magnolia went to sleep at 5 am this morning and slept soundly for a couple of hours.  This morning she is getting restless again.  The surgeon came in and was happy with her urine output.  She is feeling like we need to keep Magnolia on antibiotics for at least another day due to the severity of her infection.  We are waiting for the Pediatric Critical Care Physician to come in to talk about her plan for Magnolia's vent.  They told us yesterday that with how critical Magnolia was they were most likely going to keep her on the vent for a couple of days.  We will see what they say today.
